Does Evil Eye exist in reality?

Hadees:

Narrated Um Salama:

that the Prophet (ﷺ) saw in her house a girl whose face had a black spot. He said. “She is under the effect of an evil eye; so treat her with a Ruqyah.”

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5739

Learning:

From this Hadees it is known that evil eye really affect the soul and its consequences are also visible on the face of the person who is afflicted by it.

how much serious damage can be caused to your health by an evil eye can be estimated from the Hadees of Sahih Muslim given below.

Hadees:

Ibn ‘Abbas reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

The influence of an evil eye is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye, and when you are asked to take bath (as a cure) from the influence of an evil eye, you should take bath.

Reference : Sahih Muslim 2188

Sahih Muslim 5702

Learning:

These hadiths of Sahih Muslim prove that the evil eye is true. The things that are mentioned about Ghusl in this Hadees can be understood in depth from the following Hadees.

Hadees:

Abu Umama b. Sahl b. Hunaif told that ‘Amir b. Rabi’a saw Sahl b. Hunaif bathing and said, “I swear by God that I have seen no skin to compare with what I have seen to-day, not even that of a secluded girl.”

Sahl fell to the ground and people went to God’s messenger and said to him, “Messenger of God, can you do anything for Sahl b. Hunaif? We swear by God that he cannot raise his head ” He asked if they suspected anyone, and when they replied that they suspected ‘Amir b. Rabi‘a.

God’s messenger summoned ‘Amir, and speaking roughly to him, said, “Why does one of you kill his brother? Why did you not invoke a blessing (you should have said Ma Sha Allah or Tabarak-Allah)? Bathe on his behalf ”

‘Amir then washed on his behalf his face, hands, elbows, knees and toes, and inside his lower garment, collected the water in a vessel and poured it over him, so he recovered and went away with the people none the worse.

Learning:

From this hadees, we come to know that if we suspect that a person is responsible for causing an evil eye affliction, we will ask him to do Ghusl and by sprinkling its water on the person who is under the evil eye, he will be cured in Sha Allah. And when you are asked to perform ghusl in the case like this, you should do it without feeling bad about it.

Sunnah Dua for Evil Eye protection which is recited by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain and say: “Your forefather (i.e. Abraham) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Ishmael and Isaac by reciting the following:

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ

A’uzu bikalimatillahi-ttammah Min kulli shaytaniw-wa hammah, wamin kulli ‘ayni-llammah

‘O Allah! I seek Refuge with Your Perfect Words from every devil and from poisonous pests and from every evil, harmful, envious eye.’ “

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 3371

Reference : Sunan Abi Dawud 4737

As mentioned in Abi Dawud, when the Prophet (ﷺ) recited this dua on his two children Hasan and Hussain (عَلُيْهِ ٱلسّلَامُ), instead of reciting أَعُوذُ a’uzu, he recited أُعِيذُكُمَا u’izukma, and if you pray for all your family members, then instead of reading أَعُوذُ A’uzu, you should recite أُعِيذُكُم U’izukum.

Dua for Evil Eye Protection in Quran

The disbelievers would almost cut you down with their eyes when they hear ˹you recite˺ the Reminder, and say, “He is certainly a madman.”

Surah Al Qalam, Ayat 51 (Quran 68:51)

Learning:

As you saw in the above verse of the Quran, when the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) read the Quran, the polytheists of Mecca tried to afflict him with evil eye.

Because the evil eye is mentioned in this verse of the Holy Quran, some brothers have had the experience that by reciting this verse they have been cured of evil eye. Therefore, if you want, you can also read this verse of Quran as a cure for evil eye, hence it is also a dua for evil eye protection.

Reciting Ruqyah as Dua for Evil Eye

Hadees:

Auf b. Malik Ashja’i reported We practised incantation (Ruqyah) in the pre-Islamic days and we said:

Allah’s Messenger. what is your opinion about it? He said: Let me know your incantation (Ruqyah) and said: There is no harm in the incantation (Ruqyah) which does not smack of polytheism.

Reference : Sahih Muslim 2200

sahih muslim 5732 International Number

Learning:

In the above Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has also given permission to read the Ruqyah of Jahiliyyah for the treatment of evil eye.

When the Ruqyah of pre-islamic era can be recited, then if a person has come to know through his experience that by reciting a verse of the Quran, a disease is cured, then we should read the verse as a Ruqiyah. It is also learnt from this hadees.

Performing Ruqyah to treat Evil Eye

Surah Qalam ayat 51 mentioned above can also be used to cure the evil eye affliction. And in the same way, if anyone has learned by experience that the evil eye can be cured by reciting any other ayat of the Quran then that ayat can be used as Ruqyah.

And because we have seen above the hadees in Sahih Muslim 5732 as per International Number, in which it is also allowed to use the Ruqyah of the pre-islamic era, the times of ignorance, with strict condition that there should be no polytheism in those Ruqyah.

What this means is that if you have found out that by chanting any verse of the Quran or any other phrase, the evil eye can be cured, then you can do so, Allah’s Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has permitted it, but you must not call anyone for help except Allah in your supplication.

Reciting Ruqyah to cure the bite of Poisonous pests

Hadees:

Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported that Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) granted a special sanction for incantation in case of the snake poison to a tribe of ‘Amr. Abu Zubair said:

I heard Jabir b. ‘Abdullah as saying that the scorpion stung one of us as we were sitting with Allah’s Messenger (may peace upon him). A person said: Allah’s Messenger, I use incantation (for curing the effect. of sting), whereupon he said: He who is competent amongst you to benefit his brother should do so.

Reference : Sahih Muslim 2199a

Sahih Muslim 5731

Learning:

In the above hadees, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has given free rein that if anyone knows any such dam (ruqyah) whose recitation leads to healing, then he can do so, rather the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) encouraged to do so.

The Way of Performing Ruqyah

In order to perform Dum, that is, Ruqyah, you should read any verse of the Qur’an, or the Sunnah Dua for evil eye protection, or any phrase you want (there shall be no polytheism) and blow directly on the afflicted person. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not approve of blowing on the water.

Of course, you can recite the ruqyah on water, this will make the water blessed by these phrases and you can give the water to the afflicted person, who will be cured by drinking it, In Sha Allah.

Receiving payment for performing Ruqyah

A hadees is given below, it is the Muttaffaqun Alaih hadees of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, it is a very famous hadees of reciting Surah Fatiha as a Ruqyah.

Hadees:

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:

Some of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them.

While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) ), “Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?” The Prophet’s companions said, “You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it.”

So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet’s companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite).

The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, “We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful).”

When they asked him, he smiled and said, “How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me.”

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5736

Learning:

It is proved from this Hadees that if a person does a contract that he will perform Ruqyah and in return he will have some amount as a payment, then it is also considered permissible by Prophet of Allah (ﷺ), provided there is no polytheism in those ruqyah.
