Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught Durood Ibrahim to his companions ( رضي الله عنه). This incident happened when the verse 56 of Chapter Al Ahzab was revealed:
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ ۚ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ صَلُّوا۟ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا۟ تَسْلِيمًا ٥٦
Inn-Allaha wa Malaikatuhu yusalloona ala-nnabiy, Ya ayyuh-allazeena amanu sallu alayhi wa sallimu taslima.
Indeed, Allah showers His blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him. O believers! Invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace.
Then companions of prophet asked him that o prophet of Allah (ﷺ), you have taught us how to salute you with greetings of peace, now please teach us how to invoke Allah’s blessings upon you. Then Durood Ibrahim was revealed to Prophet (ﷺ) and he taught Durood Ibrahim to his companions.

Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila:
Ka`b bin Ujrah met me and said, “Shall I not give you a present I got from the Prophet?” `Abdur- Rahman said, “Yes, give it to me.” I said, “We asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! How should one (ask Allah to) send blessings upon you, and the members of your family, for Allah has taught us how to salute you (in the prayer)?’ He said, ‘Say:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ
عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ،
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ
عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ale Muhammad, kama sallayta ‘ala ibrahima wa ‘ala ale Ibrahima, innaka hamidummajeed.
Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ale Muhammad, kama barakta ‘ala ibrahima wa ‘ala ale Ibrahima, innaka hamidummajeed.
Durood Ibrahim in Arabic
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
Durood Ibrahim in English Transliteration
Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ale Muhammad, kama sallayta ‘ala ibrahima wa ‘ala ale Ibrahima, innaka hamidummajeed. Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ale Muhammad, kama barakta ‘ala ibrahima wa ‘ala ale Ibrahima, innaka hamidummajeed.
Durood Ibrahim English Translation
O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.
O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.’ “
